I love Bosch tools. They're well made and get the job done. This gadget is a dust collector attachment for your SDS-Plus rotohammer that captures dust when drilling holes in concrete. If you've ever done this you know that it makes a huge mess, so this is a really nifty tool.

It's billed as a "Universal Dust Collection Attachment" that fits any SDS Plus rotary hammer drill. It comes with a collection head and a bracket that attaches to your rotary hammer that binds the vacuum hose to your drill. The collection head has a spring loaded clamp that holds it in place against your drill bit (up to 5/8"). There are lots of nooks and crannies where dust can collect but overall looks to be a pretty decent design.

Although it's billed as "universal" the vacuum attachment is designed to work with the "Bosch Quick Connect hose-attachment system". That's a fancy way of saying that it works with Bosch vacuums that have a special 35mm (1 3/8") snap-in vacuum hose, and if you want it to work with anything else you need an adapter that the kit doesn't come with. The manual claims that Bosch offer adapters to connect to regular vacuums so technically speaking it is "universal".

EDIT: It turns out that the special Quick Connect hose attachment on this device actually has a standard 35mm dust port at its center. I was able to locate the Bosch VAC002 adapter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000AV77K) which can be used to adapt this attachment to either a 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" standard vacuum hose.

This adapter is a well designed and thoughtfully executed product, particularly if you happen to have a Bosch vacuum system. If you don't you absolutely need the VAC002 adapter in order to use this attachment since it's literally the only adapter I could find that would work. Frankly it should have come with one.

Well, you may have to get some adapters for your vacuum to make this work. And yes, setting it all up is sort of time consuming and annoying, but in some cases, it's so worth it. Specifically, I despise drill holes into my exterior masonry walls (plaster on block on brick), especially in bedrooms, where you have worry about all that dust - about the worst kind of dust - suddenly catching a draft and getting into the bedding, rugs, etc. I usually end up with a big pile of wet rags, some of which I have to hold with a third hand under the bit. You get the idea. Anyway, this is better than that, if you have a hose long enough (like, if I'm drilling for curtains at 9 or 10' and on a ladder to do it, the vacuum has to be on the floor or it's just as cumbersome as the way I described previously).

Given how nasty masonry dust is, this isn't enough to keep me from wearing a respirator, so it doesn't alleviate that burden, but it's a great accessory to have. I was sort of surprised and maybe disappointed that it only really works with 5/8" bits or below. But I guess when you're drilling larger than that, you can't expect to keep anything clean...

I do quite a bit (bit...get it?) of masonry drilling and drilling through dusty materials. Drilling anchor bolt holes is one such task which can produce cement dust which backs up in the hole. Generally I have used a vacuum and bristle brush to clean out such cement holes. I thought why not see if the Bosch BlueCollar SDS-plus® Universal Dust Collection Attachment makes this process easier?

The collar itself is a bit on the clunky side and consists of two parts; a drill base section (Dust Adapter) and a Hose Support Arm. The hose support arm attaches to SDS style secondary handles, so to use this item you will need to have your secondary drill handle installed. I can confirm that this attachment works on an SDS drill handle however does not install on my Mikita hammer drill. This is important as the Hose Support Arm actually holds the dust adapter part in place. So you will need an SDS compatible drill.

The vacuum hose attachment itself is also problematic if you do not have the correct hose diameter and attachment. This unit's instructions state that the hose attaches to the Dust Adapter by way of snap in connector which comes with the Bosch vacuum hose. This is fine if you have a Bosch vacuum hose or other compatible vacuum hose connector. What I have is duct tape! So to use this unit, I resorted to duct taping the hose to the Dust Adapter.

When testing the adapter, it does indeed collect most of the dust from a test 5 inch deep hole in concrete using a 1/2 bit. Note that this unit only works with bits 3/8" to 5/8". There is a bit of plastic contact with the spinning bit which leads me to believe that in the long run the device will wear over time. However, it should stand up to drilling several holes a day for some time, if care is taken during set up.

Overall I have to say that for me, this device isn't worth the time of installation and finding/purchasing compatible parts. This is not something I would recommend for a casual user. However, if used with a SDS-type drill and compatible Bosch snap in vacuum hose connector, someone who routinely drills multiple masonry holes could find this of value. In other words, someone who would attach this dust collector to the drill semi-permanently. For a casual user, this device simply isn't worth the installation time. Drill your hole, hand vacuum, scrub with a hole cleaning brush and vacuum again. Done.

The vacuum system is designed very well. It has an intake at the top to pull in fresh air so there's always air flowing, and it circles around the bottom to make sure that anything that might get through gets re-captured again.

The vacuum attachment has a clip that's designed for Bosch vacuums. I was wondering if it would come with an adapter for third party vacuums, but it does not. That's a separate purchase.

The vacuum hose holder attachment uses zip ties. The good news is they can be cut and replaced, it just seems like an odd choice. I feel like a clip would work better. This seems like something that's currently designed to be permanently attached to a vacuum hose once it's installed. I'd say most people that have one of these probably keep a supply of zip ties around, but even still.

It does a great job of collecting dust. I like it better than the bristle brush style.

      Overall a great attachment.

      Highly recommended.
